Two FRC thematic reviews aim to strengthen corporate reporting

The UK Financial Reporting Council reports highlight opportunities for improvement in the areas of financial instruments reporting and reporting on intangible value drivers.

The UK Financial Reporting Council (FRC) on Tuesday published thematic reviews examining financial instruments reporting and reporting on intangible value drivers.

The thematic reviews, according to a news release, highlight practical opportunities for companies to strengthen their corporate reporting by delivering high-quality, decision-useful information that tells a clear story of their business operations and performance.

The thematic review of financial instruments reporting comes after financial instruments were the second-most cited issue raised in the FRC’s 2025–2026 corporate reporting review cycle (trailing only cash flow statements). The thematic review, according to the news release, identifies opportunities to improve the clarity and usefulness of disclosures under IFRS 7, Financial Instruments: Disclosures, in relation to hedge accounting, expected credit losses, and debt factoring. It also highlights the benefits of taking a principles-based approach to disclosure.

The thematic review of reporting intangible value drivers comes as many business models are dependent on intangible areas such as technology and knowledge. The thematic review, according to the release, encourages companies to better explain how key intangible value drivers support their business model, strategy, and future performance, and it encourages companies to improve the connectivity between strategic reports and financial statements.
